The investigation into beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s tragic death in Singapore has taken a shocking turn. Furthermore, Assam Police have now added murder charges against four individuals. Murder Charges Rock Investigation

On October 3, 2024, the Assam Crime Investigation Department added Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to the case. Consequently, this section deals specifically with punishment for murder. Previously, investigators had only filed charges for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, intensive interrogation of suspects revealed new evidence warranting the upgraded charges.

Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed the development during a press briefing. “The investigation is ongoing, and I cannot share much detail. We have added Section 103 of the BNS in the FIR now,” he stated. Therefore, the probe has intensified significantly with the inclusion of murder charges.

Four Arrests Deepen Mystery

Assam Police have arrested four individuals in connection with Garg’s death. Initially, authorities detained Siddharth Sharma, Garg’s manager, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the Northeast India Festival organizer. Subsequently, police arrested musicians Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta on October 2, 2024.

Notably, Goswami and Mahanta were present during the fatal yacht outing. Sources within the Special Investigation Team revealed that Goswami was seen swimming close to Garg before he drowned. Meanwhile, Amritprava Mahanta filmed the entire incident on her cellphone.

Key Arrests Timeline

October 1, 2024: Police arrested Siddharth Sharma in Gurgaon and Shyamkanu Mahanta at Delhi airport. Both were brought to Guwahati under tight security.

October 2, 2024: Authorities detained Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta after extensive questioning by the SIT.

October 3, 2024: Guwahati court remanded all four accused to 14-day police custody for further investigation.

Singapore Autopsy Report Raises Questions

The Singapore Police Force handed over Garg’s official autopsy report to the Indian High Commission. Originally, Singaporean authorities ruled out foul play and cited drowning as the cause of death. However, Assam investigators are conducting their own post-mortem examination.

“Police investigations are currently underway in the matter, while the public has been advised to refrain from sharing any videos or images related to the matter.”

Viscera samples have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi. Additionally, investigators are awaiting critical forensic results that could provide new insights into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.

Wife Alleges Forceful Participation

Garima Saikia Garg, the singer’s widow, made shocking allegations about the events leading to her husband’s death. She claimed that Zubeen was forcibly taken to the yacht party despite his medical condition.

“From the videos circulating on social media, it is very clear he was extremely exhausted that day,” Garima revealed. Furthermore, she emphasized that everyone knew about his seizure disorder and that doctors had specifically advised him against going near water.

Medical Condition Ignored

Garima disclosed that since 2020, Zubeen suffered from seizures. Significantly, his entire team, including his manager and associates, were aware of this condition. Moreover, doctors had explicitly warned him to avoid water and fire.

“He was never allowed to drive either. Still, he was taken to a yacht party, into the water, and allowed to swim without a life jacket,” she stated angrily. Therefore, the negligence appears even more severe given this medical background.

Evidence Seizure Intensifies Probe

During the investigation, CID officials recovered Garg’s personal handbag from his manager Siddharth Sharma. Importantly, the bag contained crucial documents and medicines. Subsequently, investigators sent the medicines for forensic examination to determine if they played any role in the tragedy.

The Special Investigation Team is examining every piece of evidence methodically. Additionally, they are analyzing video footage from the yacht party to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.

MLAT Activated for International Cooperation

The Assam government has invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with Singapore. Consequently, this will facilitate greater cooperation between Indian and Singaporean authorities in the investigation. Furthermore, two Assam Police officers are preparing to travel to Singapore once clearance is obtained.

The international cooperation aspect demonstrates the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case. Moreover, it ensures that no stone is left unturned in uncovering the truth behind Garg’s death.

Public Outcry Demands Justice

More than 60 FIRs were filed across Assam alleging negligence by organizers and associates. Significantly, the public outcry reflects the deep love and respect Assamese people had for their cultural icon. Therefore, pressure continues to mount on investigators to deliver justice.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the CID to consolidate all complaints into a single comprehensive investigation. Consequently, this ensures that all aspects of the case receive proper attention.

Critical Evidence Under Scrutiny

Investigators are focusing on several key pieces of evidence:

Video footage from the yacht party shows Garg’s condition before entering the water
Cellphone recordings by Amritprava Mahanta capture the incident as it unfolded
Medical records confirm Garg’s seizure disorder and doctor’s warnings
Witness statements from yacht party attendees reveal potential inconsistencies

The Road Ahead

The investigation continues to evolve as new evidence emerges. Furthermore, the addition of murder charges suggests that investigators suspect foul play despite Singapore’s initial findings. Therefore, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this was a tragic accident or something more sinister.

The case has united Assam in grief and determination to seek justice. Moreover, Zubeen Garg’s legacy as a cultural icon who transcended religious and linguistic barriers makes this investigation even more significant for the region.
